Chapter 1: The Dare

“So, everyone, let’s meet up at the front gate tonight at 11 pm, and don’t forget to bring your flashlight and spare batteries. Oh, and anyone who chickens out will be humiliated for the rest of the year; except for the ladies, feel free to cuddle up close girls, Dave and I will keep you safe,” said Hamish as he looked around the group.

Jet, Skylar, and I rolled our eyes as the girls giggled. Hamish walked over to Skylar and put his arm around the back of her shoulders, pulling her in close to him.

“Especially you baby doll. I’ll make sure to protect you from the spooky ghosts tonight,” he grinned rubbing his hand up and down her arm. She squirmed out of his grip giving him an angry glare.

“Touch me again and I’ll turn you into a ghost. And don’t call me baby doll either, my name is Skylar,” she snapped turning her back to face Jet and me. Hamish smirked at us as he backed away.

“You two had better watch your backs,” he threatened, pointing his finger at Jet and me.

Skylar turned to glare at him again, as Hamish walked off to join the other girls.

“God, can’t he take a hint,” she growled as she walked toward the gate. “I’m not interested in him.”

Jet and I followed along behind her. All three of us live in the same apartment building and had grown up together. We had been best friends since preschool – and did everything together, even took family vacations together. Well, we used to when we were kids.

“So, why are we going to the haunted slaughterhouse?” asked Jet as he noshed on his apple.

“Because of an article in the paper recently saying that the crazy guy who killed his wife in the slaughterhouse had died and that his son might still be living there. Or the killer’s ghost had returned to haunt the place,” I explained while kicking a pebble along the footpath.

“Oh, okay. But I mean, why are we going?” asked Jet as he continued to munch on his apple. “Hamish doesn’t even like us. We’re not part of his social group.”

Jet wasn’t the brightest of people. His parents were hippies from the late 1970's, who enjoyed their weed and took life casually. He was a tall, skinny bloke with shaggy blond hair, tanned skin, and had a lightly freckled face. Jet loved guitar and was amazing at art. He wasn’t the smartest or sharpest person, but he was a loyal friend and was always there to lend a hand.

Skylar let out an obviously annoyed sigh.

“The only reason you two are invited is so that Hamish could invite me because he knows that I won’t go unless you guys are going. He’s doing it ‘cause he thinks he can get closer to me. He’s a big-headed, egotistical jerk who can’t take no for an answer and, if we end up getting split into groups, I’m going with you guys,” she said storming off ahead of us.

“Oh,” continued Jet wiping the apple residue off his face with his sleeve, “it’s ‘cause you’re the prettiest girl in school.”

Skylar let out another sigh...
